What is mantra meditation?
Mantra meditation, as quoted by the National Institutes of Health (.gov) website, "Mantra-based meditation (MBM) generally involves the continuous repetition of a word, phrase, or set of syllables (either silently or aloud) with or without religious/spiritual content."
Psychology Today article - Kirtan: The Easy Meditation That Can Improve Your Brain
Mantra meditation has been around for at least thousands of years. Over the years some well-known people have integrated mantra meditation into their lives and shared/share it with the world. Some of those people were/are: Allen Ginsberg, Alice Coltrane, Boy George, George Harrison, Ram Das, Krishna Das, Willow Smith, Tina Turner and many more! Mantra meditation is effective regardless of anyone's beliefs, even if you are an atheist. In fact, many atheists enjoy the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra! One does not need to know what the mantras mean or where they came from to benefit from the transcendental vibrations. Ancient Sanskrit mantras which contain the names of the Divine are not man-made mantras nor do they come from the material world, they are sound productions from the spiritual world! When we sing these mantras we are tuning into the vibration of the soul, we are having a very personal and direct experience with the Divine, as such it can be one of the most healing activities a human being can engage in.
What are the benefits of mantra meditation?
There are many credible scientific studies that confirm the benefits of mantra meditation! The links highlighted above are great resources. Please, check them out if you haven't. Mantra meditation has been clinically proven to effectively relieve anxiety, depression and stress. The practice of mantra meditation can increase awareness, psychological well-being, decrease systolic and diastolic blood pressure and lower serum cortisol levels significantly. Mantra meditation also shuts down the fight or flight response in the limbic system within a couple of minutes of chanting (info sourced from Dr. Sweta Adatia - Neuroscience of Chanting).
